What is Drizzle?
Drizzle is an open source database management system (DBMS) that has gotten a bit of attention lately primarily because some high profile names are behind it and because for many in the open source community it represents an essential break from Oracle. Simply put, Drizzle is a fork of the MySQL database being led by MySQL’s co-founder Monty Widenius. But Drizzle is actually much more than a fork of MySQL. It is a re-imagining of MySQL. Drizzle, not yet production ready, aims to be a lightweight database designed for the web and for cloud computing.
Drizzle will work very differently from MySQL. The developers are designing a microkernel style architecture in which various modules can be compiled in or loaded to extend the functionality. The end result is an extremely lightweight database geared for web backends and cloud computing. Drizzle will be able to handle concurrency which, as the developers point out, puts it somewhere between SQLite and MySQL.
The Drizzle project is also working towards an open and collaborative development model. Unlike MySQL, developers will hold the copyright to the code they contribute much like any other open source project. Drizzle will be licensed using the GPL version 2 license. Part of this decision was shaped by the license governing the existing MySQL code upon which Drizzle is based. Plugins can be written for Drizzle with any GPL compatible license. The licensing will be a welcome move to many open source advocates who are concerned about Oracle’s intentions for former Sun open source projects. Oracle’s recent lawsuit against Google has also created a lot of concern in the open source community about using MySQL and other Oracle projects.
Drizzle will be developed for Linux, Mac OS and both the Intel and Sparc versions of Solaris. There are no plans for Drizzle to run on Windows. The project team is limiting the platforms that Drizzle will run on in order to focus more on the application itself. While they do say that it will run on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, their target platform is 64-bit multi-processor architectures.
Drizzle is using the InnoDB storage engine. It is being designed to run a limited number of field types with the focus being on “standard” types like blob, varchar, text, int, float, date, datetime, and a few others. Drizzle is not a SQL-compliant database and the project founders make it clear that it is not their intention for it to be. They clearly state that users should not expect Drizzle to be another MySQL.
The Drizzle project is off to a strong start. The project team has the coding standards and a guide available for those wanting to get involved in the development. There is already a decent sized code base but the project founders also provide the caveat that it is not production ready as many incompatible changes are still being made and are still planned. However, it is a very interesting project and has the potential to be the database of choice for cloud architectures like MySQL quickly became the database of choice for the web.

Federal Contracting for minorities is a topic that deserves more discussion between small business owners and federal procurement officers. The reason that a discourse around this topic is overdue is because of the lack of minorities in federal contracting. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA) there are only 170,934 small businesses who are registered federal contractors. Of course just because a company has registered as a federal contractor on the government’s website CCR, does not mean the company is an active and successful federal contractor.
When you begin to take a closer look at the 170,934 small businesses you will find that only 2% are minorities. Granted, there are other set asides and there is another conversation that could be had about the set aside program and it’s necessity. However this article is not about the set aside programs and how they are still relevant, but more focused on how we as a country can move past the distain and distrust whenever someone says or feel that minorities are still a extra hand when we all need a hand.
There is no argument that this country in a state of disrepair and we all need to pull together if we are going to get out of our current condition. In order to do so we must recognize that we all have different needs and what will work for some will not work for others, but we are all moving to a common goal.
What I am advocating in here is team work. Surprise that I didn’t say we should increase the amount that is set aside for minorities and that the government should do a better job in attracting minority business owners.
The last thing I would push would be extending and increasing a quota. What I believe will help maintain and cultivate diversity in contracting and increase federal contracting for monitories are partnerships. There are so many federal contracting opportunities that are two large for a single small business, however if small businesses team up with other small businesses particularly minorities, everyone wins. I am not trying to be “molly cheerleader”, but prime contractors do it all the time. In fact, all prime contractors who receive a federal contract over five million dollars must subcontract to a small business; moreover prime contractors must also meet certain set aside goals within their own contracting programs. As you can see I am not suggesting something that is so farfetched that no one could or would do it. Believe me if prime contractors are partnering or teaming with small businesses there must be a reason and you can bet it is not because they are benevolent.
You might be wonder how a small business even go about teaming with another small business. There are many avenues to find a partner, but one thing you might consider is looking at your own company’s strengths and weaknesses.
Think about how your product offering or service could be improved by partnering. Here is an example:
• The government was looking for a couples retreat package for its married
soldiers.
• A therapist saw the request for proposal and knew her firm could service
the need, however they did not have the required accommodations
• The therapist contacted a travel agency and discussed how they could work together to create a travel package for the government’s request.
The therapist firm was simple a small business, however because they partnered with another small business that was woman and minority owned when they submitted their proposal, the government buyer found their proposal to be the “best value”.
Although we are not going to talk about “best value” in this article, it is common place for the government buyers select a bid not solely based on price. Part of the “best value” in this scenario was that the buyer’s needs were met and although the bid was not the lowest or the highest, the value the government received is that the contractors are both marginalized group within federal contracting and it serves the greater good to award the business to this bid.

Everyone knows the class bully. He has a reputation and wants to keep it that way. Unfortunately, not all states have adopted school bullying prevention methods and a teacher may take the wrong approach toward reacting to your complaint for lack of training. Never should a school official place a victim and the bully in the same room to work things out. This will only fuel the bully and make the victim feel humiliated.
If a week has passed and the school staff seems to be ignoring your pleas for help and there seems to be no signs of school bullying prevention, don’t give up! Sit down and write a letter to the school principal or administrator. Be specific in your charges with names, dates, places and the actions of the bully. Make a copy and keep in case your letter does not get a quick response. If you are not contacted after a week, send another letter to the school superintendent. Very seldom will this action be ignored.
Overall, be persistent regarding your rights. Don’t allow yourself to fall prey to bullying that can lead to worse abuse to yourself and others. Involve your parents or an adult that is prominent in your life and don’t give up the fight. The days of ignoring the school bully are over and the offending party or group of bullies needs to realize that there are consequences for not following school bullying prevention methods. You just may be helping out the bully as well. They may be acting out because of their own personal frustrations and your persistence could move them in the right direction to seek professional help.

The Neuroscience Of Financial Success
How do you know what your present beliefs are? A great way to gauge what your beliefs are about your finances is take a look at your current financial situation. If you dont like your financial status, or you want to achieve more, you have to start by programming the most powerful resource you haveyour brain.
Have you calculated how much you need to earn per hour to achieve your yearly financial goals? Have you ever asked yourself what your highest income producing activity is?
If you’re like most people you probably go about your day-to-day business never really thinking about the moment-to-moment activities that consume your day. I’d like to walk you through an exercise that has helped me and my clients stay focused on earning their highest possible revenue per hour.
Let’s assume that we each start with 365 days in a year. If we take away the following:
Weekends 104 days
Two weeks of vacation
Personal religious holidays – (Three is the average)
That leaves each one of us with approximately 238 days in order to earn the income we desire. Of course, we can add or delete days based on our own schedule and desires. If you multiply these 238 days times an average of 10 working hours per day, you are dealing with 2,380 hours of real work time for the year. So let’s do some math. If your yearly income goals are as follows:
$ 25k = you must be earning an average of $ 10.50 every hour of work.
$ 50K = $ 21 per hour
$ 100k = $ 42 per hour
$ 250k = $ 105 per hour
$ 1 M = $ 420 per hour
$ 5 M = $ 2100 per hour
$ 10 M = $ 4200 per hour
In order to earn the income per year that you really want, you absolutely must be doing activities every hour that line up with this chart. If you catch yourself doing anything that isn’t your absolute highest producing income activity all the time, you are in effect making it much harder to achieve your desired financial goals. Answer these four questions:
1.What activity or activities generate your highest producing income?
2.What are you spending your time doing?
3.Are you focused on the real money makers or the real time wasters?
4.Are you making it easy for yourself to be a high-income earner or are you doing the things that can be done by someone whose income goal or ability is less than yours? (Delegate or outsource projects and tasks that arent the highest income producing use of your time.)
I can tell you that when you start to look at each hour this way, you’ll stop doing the small stuff and you’ll start doing the real high producing stuff that yields results. Just look at your most recent three to five days and count the number of hours you spent really making the big bucks vs. all the stuff that creeps up on all of us. What you discover will amaze you.
People often asked me what the next step would be if they wanted to achieve more income so here are a few thoughts for you to ponder. If you are wondering how to move your income into the next level of income per hour, just ask yourself these questions.
1. What skills must I now learn in order to command that income per hour? Please be brutally honest with yourself.
2. How long will that take?
3. Am I committed to doing that?
4. What beliefs about myself must I have in order to achieve a higher income?
5. Am I committed to changing my internal beliefs?
6. Am I prepared to take action now?
7. Who can guide me the fastest to reach my desired income/revenue?
If you put it all in the right order now, you will be programming your mind for business and financial success.
