Knowing how to save someone’s life is an ability that is often needed whether an individual is a medical professional or not. Students can learn all of the aspects of CPR and first aid by completing a certification program. Education is short and students can become certified by completing specific courses.
The American Red Cross or the American Heart Association often provides certification. Courses are taken as part of the certification process. The objective is to prepare students to handle emergency situations, which includes wound care and providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. Infant, child, and adult CPR is covered along with standard first aid in most course training programs. Almost all training courses are taught independently of a degree program but some can be integrated into a typical health care degree.
The courses taken focus on everything involved with these two emergency factors. Courses are standard but the length and names may change. Students can expect to complete courses that may include:
*The Basics of First Aid
Topics covered prepare students to provide help until a medical professional arrives. The different first aid measures are explored in order to treat injured people based on numerous factors. The treatment options are covered, which includes dealing with hypothermia, poisoning, and bone injuries. Students also learn first aid techniques for shock and burn victims.
*Adult CPR
Education covers rescue breathing in regards to an individual who is choking, in cardiac arrest, or suffering from another breathing problem. Training typically includes how to perform the Heimlich maneuver and abdominal thrust techniques. The characteristics of choking are also covered.
*Infant and Child CPR
Understanding how to perform CPR on children is crucial because the techniques change. Without the proper education more damage can occur if students conduct CPR wrong. Rescue breathing is covered along with the pressure and procedure used for infants and children.
Other courses may include teaching students how to use automated emergency defibrillators and how to perform chest compressions with CPR. Courses can be taken in many ways and students are able to apply learned knowledge to a list of medical professions. Demonstrations are performed inside the classroom and students take that knowledge and practice on dummies. Topics are covered to prepare students for the certification exam. Methods of bleeding control, blood-borne pathogen awareness, and injury assessment are topics covered within various courses.
Programs can last anywhere from two to fourteen hours. The aspects of each course are tested when students are ready to become certified. Students have to successfully pass a two-part exam. The first part is a written exam and the second part is a skills test. After passing the exam students have to recertify every year.
Whether students are becoming certified for a career as an emergency medical technician or are going to work with children in a day care center, CPR and first aid education is necessary. Full accreditation is awarded to quality programs by agencies like the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
